Spigot - The Legacy Foundation

Plugin compatibility is excellent - Paper is designed as a drop-in replacement for Spigot. Purpur - Paper with Fine-Grained Control
Purpur is a fork of Paper that maintains identical performance while adding hundreds of additional gameplay configuration options. Where Paper focuses on performance, Purpur extends Paper with configurable mechanics: allow entities to ride entities of any type, disable or modify specific enchantments, configure dolphin speed and ender dragon behavior, control mob griefing (creeper explosions, enderman block pickup), adjust anvil and enchanting costs, and hundreds more gameplay tweaks accessible through a single purpur.yml configuration file. Performance is identical to Paper since Purpur uses the same optimization patches without adding overhead. Choose Purpur if you want fine-grained gameplay control without installing extra plugins. Pufferfish is a fork of Paper focused on extreme optimization for large servers. It includes additional optimizations beyond Paper: parallelism for entity ticking (processing entities across multiple threads), simulated player system for efficient mob spawning, aggressive entity activation management, and further tick loop optimizations. Performance gains over Paper are 5-15% depending on server type and player count. Tradeoff: some mechanics behave differently - mob farms may have slightly lower spawn rates, entity behavior prioritization can change, and lag compensation may feel different in combat. Pufferfish is best for large public servers (50+ players) where every TPS point matters and minor gameplay deviations are acceptable for the performance gain.
Folia - The Multi-Threaded Future (PaperMC)
Folia is PaperMC's experimental project that adds regionized multithreading to the Minecraft server. Unlike all other server software which runs the main game loop on a single thread, Folia splits the world into independent regions and processes each region on its own thread. This means Folia can utilize ALL CPU cores simultaneously - a 16-core processor can genuinely process 16 regions in parallel. The implications are massive: 200+ player servers become practical, large modded worlds load dramatically faster, and CPU bottlenecks are significantly reduced. However, Folia is still experimental and has important limitations: plugins must be specifically updated for Folia's threading model (traditional plugins that assume single-threaded execution will break or cause data corruption), cross-region interactions (entities moving between regions) have inherent delays, and the plugin ecosystem is small compared to Paper. Folia is not recommended for general use yet - it is for large server networks willing to invest in Folia-compatible plugins and testing. If running a massive network (150+ players) with development resources: evaluate Folia with Folia-compatible plugins. Avoid Spigot unless you have a specific legacy plugin that doesn't work on Paper - and even then, check the Paper docs for alternatives.
